Nawaz Sharif

The Pakistan Supreme Court has just banned the Sharif brothers from holding elected office as a result of previous criminal convictions. One of the most intriguing aspects of this situation, apart from the fact that it has messed up elements of a crisis simulation exercise we are holding at the 'United Nations', is that whatever Zardari's role in the verdict, PM Gilani has bemoaned the decision as 'unfortunate for the prospects of democracy'. And take a look at Nawaz's curious reaction to the verdict:

Holding President Zardari personally responsible for the disqualification verdict, he spared the Pakistan People’s Party of any blame. ‘The PPP as a party cannot be held responsible for the deeds of Asif Ali Zardari, who has shattered all the dreams about prosperous and democratic Pakistan as envisaged in the Charter of Democracy,’ he said.

In other thoughts, Dawn has a very sexy new website. Someone needs to tell the Hindu to sack its webmaster.

Comments:
Sexy indeed!

Pity about the Hindu website, since they got that hotshot Guardian guy to do up their print edition. But I'd rather it stayed the way it was than become like the wretched Times of India website.

Took me a while to understand the reference to the quoteunquote United Nations ... ah, no wonder you've been so busy; that's quite some undertaking, and yes, things in pakistan refuse to unfold to everyone's convenience ...

(i think i am the only anonymous comment-leaver on your blog, so you know who i am)
